Kopitiam Cafe
Posted on March 10, 2010

Most of my favourite eateries are rather scary looking at first glance. Tiny shop-fronts, sun-faded menus stuck on the windows and grubby floors probably turn most people off, but for me these are the usual attributes of Sydney’s hidden gems. Kopitiam Cafe ticks all of these boxes and I’ve been a regular for years.

Kopitiam is located on Harris St in Ultimo. Our old office used to be around the corner, and Tsuzu and I made sure we had lunch there at least once a week.

Here’s a word of warning: many of their lunch specials are pretty average, aimed to appeal to Western tastes. So you should definitely try out their specials instead. This is their Malaysian chicken curry which costs less than ten bucks.

However their laksa has to be my hands down favourite. It has generous chunks of chicken thigh fillets, potatoes, tofu and egg (a must in my book as it enriches the broth). Sure the eccentric owner might rub some people the wrong way and the decor is nasty, but eating out is all about the food right?
