What’s a $300 steak like?

Posted on July 8, 2008

Besides cars and clothes, one area where we don’t seem to mind spending our cash on is food. We heart wagyu, and so on the weekend we (along with Zi from JDM Yard, Justin from JDMstyletuning and partners) visited Prime - one of Sydney’s most decorated and up-market steak houses - to sample how head chef Iwao Yaminishi prepares his wagyu. Their most expensive steak comes in at a whopping $295, but weighing in at 400 grams its enough to feed two people. Its Full Blood Grade 9, and reputedly the only restaurant in Sydney its available from. It’s a hell of a lot of money, but it’s all about the experience right?

One freakin' awesome wine

The waiter was kind enough to help us through the whopping wine list which boasts 350+ different types. This one was quite affordable at ~$80, and was pretty freakin’ awesome. We wolfed the bottle down in no time!

Bread

The wait for the steak was over an hour so that it could ‘rest’… At least the bread kept our mouths full for a while.

A $300 steak

Unfortunately after such a long wait, I was so hungry that I wolfed it down rather than enjoy it slowly. Even so, this steak is quite unlike anything I’ve ever eaten before. I’ve had Grade 7 scotch fillet cut wagyu before, but this fillet cut was to die for. I don’t know if its worth 300 big ones, but it’s pretty damn good nonetheless!
